Hi — Welcome to my blog!  My name is Selena Malott.  I’m a graphic designer by trade, but I enjoy many other aspects of being creative in my free time. Painting, drawing, illustrating and of course photography. Over the past 6 years I’ve had the opportunity to photograph many children in our neighborhood, not to mention, friends and family.  It’s allowed me plenty of time to hone my craft and familiarize myself with the art of capturing a child’s essence — blending into their world to encourage them to let loose and have fun. I’ve posted a variety of portraits to give you a sense of my style/approach. My favorite aspect of photographing children is watching the moment unfold. If a child is comfortable he/she will let their guard down and show you every side to them . . . before you know it, everyone is having fun and that’s when the magic happens.

Emily and Hannah – Fairplay, MD

I can’t begin to tell you how much fun I had with these blonde beauties.  We had free range of the land and we certainly took advantage of it.  The 100+ farmland was the perfect setting for our shoot.  The girls had a blast jumping, chasing geese and posing for the camera. I have to admit, I could have shot all day long.  As the sun moved about I continued to find new and interesting spots to capture a moment.  Here are some of my faves from our shoot.

Arizona – Sedona and Phoenix

Arizona was everything I’d hoped it to be and more.  Although I was only there for 3 days, I tried to see as much as humanly possible and shoot just as often.  It took some time to get to each destination but when we did it was always worth the wait.  Sedona is definitely a place I will return to — I barely scratched it’s surface and I fell in love with the place.  So much to see… here are a few memorable areas that caught my attention. Although it’s almost impossible to capture it’s beauty I tried all the same.  Hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I did photographing them.

The Hamptons – Phoenix, AZ

This shoot was quiet an adventure.  Not only did I have the opportunity to shoot an 8 piece  band (which is totally new for me) and spend time with a few old friends, I also had a chance to see a bit of the Sedona area which was utterly breathtaking at every turn.  We definitely had some fun with this shoot.  I tried to capture images that could be used for various promotional pieces and something that was unique to each of the bands members.  Here are a few of the “live” and “staged” shots that stood out.

Jacob Ruiz — 2.5 months

Allison Chess-Ruiz, a dear friend of mine, dropped by my home recently to introduce me to her sweet baby boy Jacob. That being said, I couldn’t help myself, I simply had to get my camera out and take a few shots to document the occasion and capture those big beautiful brighter than life eyes of his! It truly tickled me to see Allison beaming with pride every time she looked at him. I think it’s safe to say she’s in love!

Jack and Hunter — what a pair! :)

When people say no two kids are alike they’re not kidding!  It always amazes me how incredibly individual each and every child I meet truly is… and when it comes to siblings, you better believe that statement holds true!  Jack (age 3) was not so sure about my camera, but after 5 minutes of me being silly and making him laugh it was smooth sailing!  Giggles were echoing thru the Sullivan home in no time.  Hunter (age 1) was completely opposite.  He was utterly oblivious to me and my camera.  He trotted about laughing and playing and not giving me much thought, but clearly had a lot on his mind.  As you can see, both scenarios allowed me to capture some pretty special moments.  My favorite being the boys playing under the blanket in the yard at sundown.  HEART!

Animals and Insects

From time to time I like to focus on something new.  Lately I’ve been surrounded by animals and insects of all sizes.  Here are a few shots from some of my encounters.

Family Matters

There has been some recent interest in family sessions.  Here are a few of my personal favs — like any other session keeping it simple and quite candid is always preferred.  A few staged shots here and there are fine, but the real magic happens when everyone forgets about the camera and they can have some fun.

Junior Prom — Hagerstown City Park

A few shots from last Saturday — pre-prom photos.  It was a lot of fun to capture these shots for my handsome nephew Trey and his girlfriend Taylor at the City Park. I think they secretly felt like rock stars having me follow them around with my camera. This shoot was quite surreal for me… It’s seems like just yesterday that I would take Trey to this park and swing with him for hours. (they grow up so fast!)

Christina – 35 weeks

Although this is Christina’s 3rd baby, you’d never know it to look at her.  She’s gorgeous — my son actually asked her if she was a princess during the shoot!

With 2 boys in tow already, we’ve all got our fingers crossed that she gets her girl! One things for certain, no matter the outcome he/she will be loved dearly. Here are a few highlights from our shoot last week.

Spring has Sprung!

Spring is such an exciting time!  I always look forward to hearing the birds signing outside my window each morning, the sun on my face and the world surfacing into full bloom.  That being said, I simply can not resist taking photos of the flowers, trees and buds in all their glory.
